Some of Gaddafi’s Crimes
Internationally
- Lockerbie bombing in 1988 killing a total of 270 people (a Pan Am 103 airplane from London Heathrow to New York was bombed over a Scottish town ‘Lockerbie’). Lockerbie Bombing
- Shooting dead a British policewoman ‘Yvonee Fletcher’ in 1984 by Ghaddafi’s diplomats in anti-Gaddafi demonstrations in front of the Libyan embassy in London. Yvonne Fletcher
- Assassinations of at least 25 of his opposition members around the world between 1980 and 1987. Assassinations by Gaddafi
- La Belle discotheque Berlin bombing in 1986. Berlin Discotheque Bombing
- Disappearance of Musa Al-Sadr, a prominent Shiah leader, in his visit to Libya in 1978. Musa al-Sadr
Nationally
- Executing 1270 innocent prisoners at the Abu Salim prison in Tripoli in 1996 during the holy month of Ramadan. Their bodies were never handed to their families. Abu Salim Prison
- Injecting 400 kids (among of which are infants) with HIV in Benghazi in 1998. HIV Trial
- Bombing of a Libyan airplane after taking off from Benghazi heading to Tripoli in 1992 killing 157 most of them were university professors from Benghazi. The black box was never found. Libyan Arab Airlines Flight 1103
- Subjecting many Libyan youth to a useless war in Chad 1980. Chadian Libyan Conflict
- Polluting part of the Mediterranean Sea in Benghazi by pumping sanitation. The reason is that some relatively wealthy Libyan families have beach houses which Gaddafi considered to be a luxury they shouldn’t have.
- Corruption in all sectors in Libya with bribery becoming essential to secure any government related contracts.
- Serious deterioration in the quality of educational system, health system, infrastructure…
- Looting Libya’s national resources and using them to his own and his family’s benefits while spending so little on national development.
- Rich country and poor people, average wage in Libya is around $300.
- Nurtured racism between tribes.
- Numerous arrests and imprisonments of Libyans without any trial.
- Brought AIDS and drugs to the country.
- English teaching were prohibited in schools until recently.
- In the 1980s, it was prohibited to wear any clothes that have English letters. You would be punished (we were in elementary school) if you wear or carry a backpack that has something on it written in English.
- Writing the Green Book and making it the reference for almost every national matter. While the content of the book was supposed to appear philosophical, in reality it instigated hatred and animosity between Libyans. For example, some of the statements go “the house is for the person who lives in it” and “A land is not a property to its owner”. The former statement meant that people can occupant houses which belonged legally to other people. The second statement meant that if you own a property and the government (Gaddafi or his followers) wanted to take it, it’s theirs. No compensation of any kind.
- More and more of oppression and injustice but this is enough for now!
